Water Restrictions

With the lack of rainfall we are experiencing, we are suggesting a few lawn care tips to help your lawn make it through the summer.

#1  Only water your lawn if it is showing signs of stress like wilting or turning off color.  By only watering as needed during the spring, the grass roots will work a little harder to find water.  This will help the lawn be more drought tolerant.  If the drought continues through the summer, our local authorities will likely restrict watering to once per week or worse.  By “training” your lawn with less water early in the year, it will enable it to better survive the harsh conditions of summer.

#2  Mow your lawn at a high setting on your mower.  In our area, fescue is the most popular grass.  Fescue should be cut at 3 to 3 1/2″.  The taller the grass, the more it will shade the ground.  As an added benefit, your lawn will have fewer weeds.  Only remove about 1/3 of the grass blade at a time.  This creates less stress for the grass and helps with decomposition when you follow step #3 below.

#3  Don’t bag the grass clippings.  Grass blades are mostly made up of water.  by leaving the clippings, you are adding moisture and nutrients back into the soil.  These clippings will quickly decompose.

These are just a few tips to help your lawn this summer!
